Godzilla: Final Wars 2004 (ゴジラ ファイナルウォーズ) Toho Tristar Pictures. Directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, produced by Shogo Tomiyama, Starring Masahiro Matsuoka, Rei Kikukawa, Don Frye, Kane Kusugi, Maki Mizuno, Kazuki Kitamura and Gojira (Godzilla).
Final Wars is the 50th Anniversary film for the Big G and it has been polarized by audiences across the globe. Like Dangaioh you either love it or hate it... I happen to like it, much to the dismay of all the haters out there.
Why? Well let's start out by identifying what this is... a Japanese monster movie, not good enough? Okay let's review the fact that Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and Keizer Ghidorah all appear in this flick. Still not enough for you? How about the appearance of aliens from the Planet X, Gorath, the death of the American Godzilla, Gigan, Manda and Hedorah?
Want more? How about the appearance of mutant supermen, matrix like fight scenes, Kazuki Kitamura's over the top performance as the main bad dude, Don Frye as the tough as nails Captain Douglas Gordon or the smoking hot Maki Mizuno as the leggy Anna Otanashi.
You still want more? Hey man it's a Japanese monster movie. What were you expecting? Deep insights into the human psyche? The haters of course usually complain that the fight scenes are too brief and that the parts with the human interaction are too lengthy to which I say, the fight scenes only make Godzilla look more powerful by eliminating his foes quickly and easily and the parts with the humans fighting is really cool because wire work martial arts fights are cool.
Overall I just found this movie to be a fun filled adrenaline rush, even if some parts were hokey, but then let's go back to the subject matter. THIS IS A JAPANESE MONSTER MOVIE!!! If you wanted deep drama and navel gazing, go watch Shakespeare, he did it really good. If you're just looking for a frolicking good time than this is the movie for you, and if you don't like Godzilla then what's wrong with ya?
